In major depression, hypoactivity of monamines, especially serotonin, noradrenaline and dopamine and hyperactivity of two presynaptic inhibitory neurotransmitters, namely gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) and glutamate at specific subreceptors has been reported in the midbrain.
