Background: The α-oxo-aldehydes glyoxal and methylglyoxal are byproducts of fatty acid oxidation and glycolysis. Cancer cells produce significantly more of these aldehydes than other cells due to their high glycolytic activity. These substances are highly reactive and modify proteins.
