Introduction: Xenobiotic exposure has been discussed as a possible contributor to the obesity epidemic. Amongst others, xenobiotics may reduce the metabolic rate because they interfere with the hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid endocrine axis by inducing enzymes that inactivate thyroid hormones.
