Hepatocyte apoptosis promotes hepatic injury and fibrosis whereas activated stellate cell (HSC) apoptosis limits hepatic fibrosis. Therefore it is unclear whether phamacologic inhibition of apoptosis whould attenuate liver injury or promote hepatic fibrosis.
