Intestinal intraepithelial lymphocytes (IEL) are a population of mainly CD8 positive, cytotoxic cells, in daily contact with a vast variety of oral antigens. Therefore the proliferative activity of these cells has to be tightly controlled to avoid excessive immune response with consecutive mucosal damage.
