Perianal and perineal ultrasound has been suggested to be of high diagnostic value in a wide variety of diseases such as chronic inflammatory bowel diseases, fistula and abscesses as well as anal or rectal carcinomas. However, despite these obvious advantages it still is a rarely applied diagnostic modality, far from being used in diagnostic routine.
