Conclusions The value of accurate breast cancer staging with the intention of improving the outcome is undisputed, but in certain cases of minimal tumors this goal cannot be attained. There is, on the contrary, an inherent danger of overtreatment with no effect on therapeutical safety and overall prognosis. These cases can potentially have medico-legal consequences, however, in the light of possible malpractice cases it must be stated that ensuring accuracy in the diagnosis of malignant diseases will lead to some procedures being performed unnecessarily.
