Progress in molecular genetics, biochemical techniques, and neuroimaging, particularly magnetic resonance imaging, have facilitate the diagnosis of a significant proportion of leukodystrophies. A specific diagnosis allows the physician to give prognostic information, monitor for known complications, and ultimately may allow disease specific therapeutics.
