Zusammenfassung

Patients with severe blood loss due to trauma, surgery and child-birth may require transfusion with blood components to maintain the overall hemodynamics, optimal tissue oxygenation and coagulation capacity. The potential risk of viral and bacterial transmission from donor to recipient has led to development of screening procedures - at least in the developed countries - to garantee the quality of blood components. At present transmission of HIV and Hepatitis viruses are very infrequent.
