Zusammenfassung

Summary Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a chronic relapsing condition which affects 10-20 % of all adults. It is a disease with unknown cause and no proven effective cure. Many factors have been discussed in the pathogenesis of IBS. Inflammatory cells are considered to be of a central role in the pathophysiology of IBS. Such cells may prime the gut and lead to an exaggerated inflammatory reaction entailing changes of motility in the gut.
