Introduction and Aim: Obesity is fast becoming a major global health problem, and identifying the alleles which contribute to this problem is of great importance. The melanocortin-4 receptor gene (MC4R) is a key protein in the regulation of adiposity, and many different null alleles have been identified at this locus, causing up to 6% of the obesity cases in the world. In this study we present a population genetics and evolutionary perspective of this locus.
