The Night Eating Syndrome is characterized as a disordered circadian pattern of food intake in the presence of intact circadian sleep pattern. Food intake is minimal during the first part of the day and accelerates later in the day with 35% of caloric intake being consumed after the evening meal. The disorder is further characterized by night-time awakenings to consume modest amounts of food. NES occurs in both persons of normal weight and, more commonly, among the obese and there is growing evidence that it contributes to the development of obesity.
