The nuclear transcription factor Peroxisome Proliferator Activated Receptor Gamma (PPARgamma) is a major regulator of lipid and glucose metabolism. PPARgamma activation by the synthetic ligands, thiazolidinediones (TZDs), results in insulin sensitization and lowers blood glucose. Recently, a subset of Angiotensin Type 1 Receptor Blockers (ARBs) has been identified as PPARgamma ligands with partial agonism.
