The nuclear transcription factor Peroxisome Proliferator Activated Receptor Gamma (PPARgamma) is a major regulator of lipid and glucose metabolism. PPARgamma activation by the synthetic ligands, thiazolidinediones (TZDs), results in insulin sensitization and lowers blood glucose. Recently, a subset of Angiotensin Type 1 Receptor Blockers (ARBs) has been identified as PPARgamma ligands with partial agonism. It has been hypothesized that ligand mediated regulation of PPARgamma expression might be involved in the antidiabetic action of TZDs.
