Purpose: Malabsorption of micronutrients is an adverse effect of proton pump inhibitors (PPIs). This work elucidates worsening solubility of metal aquo-complexes when changing gastrointestinal pH from 2.0 (men) or 2.5 (women) to permanently more than 4.0. Methods: A simple model of solubility of trace metal ions at GI tube-like pH was validated. Mixtures of 0.5% FeCl3 or CuSO4 with or w/o 1% ascorbic acid (to stabilize reduced forms) were screened in vitro using turbidimetric UV/Vis absorption spectrometry.
