Protein-energy malnutrition (PEM) and chronic inflammation are frequent complications in patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) and hemodialysis (HD). These conditions are highly predictive for vascular events and mortality. To determine the influence of an intensive dietetic intervention programme over a 5 month period on nutritional status and inflammation we studied prealbumin, serum albumin, normalized protein catabolic rate (nPCR), body mass index (BMI), body cell mass (BCM), nutrition intake (3-day dietary recall) and CRP in 30 patients (17 men, 13 women) with ESRD at the beginning of HD treatment.
