The clinical evidence for routine post-operative nutritional support is controversial. A meta-analysis (Lewis et al, 2001) suggested that enteral nutrition may reduce the incidence of post-operative complications. However, it was concluded that an adequately powered RCT be conducted. Methods: All patients admitted for upper GI and hepatobiliary surgery across South Wales are eligible to enter the trial. Patients are then randomized to either conventional management i.e. Nil by Mouth until passage of flatus or immediate post operative enteral nutrition via a needle catheter jejunostomy.
