Amino acids function as nutritional signals in a number of cellular processes and their homeostasis seems tightly regulated. The most abundant free amino acid in plasma, glutamine (Gln), is a major fuel for the immune system. During critical illness, its level declines and ex vivo experiments have associated this with a reduced responsiveness of leukocytes to exogenous stimuli and an increased susceptibility to apoptosis triggers.
