The importance of an optimised supply of long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LCPUFA) during pregnancy for fetal growth and development is widely accepted now. However, LCPUFA are susceptible to peroxidation and require adequate antioxidative protection. As vitamin E requirements during pregnancy are not defined yet, we investigated whether different LCPUFA intakes affect plasma tocopherol levels. Healthy women with uncomplicated singleton pregnancies, aged 18–41 years, who consumed omnivorous diets were recruited in Germany, Spain and Hungary.
