Objective: To describe the nutrition support provided to critically ill patients with a length of stay of greater than 72 hours. Design: A retrospective review of patients admitted to the mixed Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at hospital Liestal from July 2006 to June 2008 was performed. Subjects: A convenience sample of eligible patients was used to collect data from the electronic medical chart. A total of 3,915 patients were admitted within the timeframe, 276 (7.0%) stayed >72 hours in the ICU, and 133 (3.4%) received nutrition support.
