A serious complication of chronic heart failure is cardiac cachexia (CC) with a prevalence of 10–15% in CHF patients. The complex metabolic changes entail a catabolic/anabolic imbalance which leads to body wasting and poor prognosis. There is currently no therapeutic option for CC. Ghrelin, the natural ligand for the growth hormone secretagogue (GHS) receptor, has been demonstrated to induce food intake and is suggested to enhance cardiac function.
