Background: Most studies on gender in medical sciences still confine to observing health differences between males and females, thus neglecting variations within the sexes in terms of gender role identifications. Where research does target gender roles, however, aged and potentially unsuitable methodological tools are often used. The objective of this review was to give a systematic overview of research conducted on the relationship between gender role and health deficiencies.
