IntroductionAt the end of January 2020, the first case of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus type 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection in Germany was confirmed [1]. The subsequent waves of the COVID-19 pandemic were characterised by different levels of infection numbers, hospitalisation rates, and death rates [2]. This was largely due to changing immunity levels following infections, COVID-19 vaccinations that became available at the end of 2020 [3], and the temporary dominance of different virus variants [4].
