IntroductionOver 40% of patients over 65 years old in general hospitals show cognitive decline with nearly 1 in 5 suffering from dementia, while dementia is often not detected as a secondary diagnosis at hospital admission [6]. The situation is similar worldwide and will not ease in the next few years due to demographic change, despite a slightly lower incidence of dementia [20, 22].Due to the heterogeneity of healthcare systems internationally, there is no single solution to improving the situation for people with dementia and hospital staff.
