BackgroundThe average age of clinically treated patients has increased regardless of the specific clinical activity (e.g. internal, surgical and urological) [6]; therefore, an increase in age-related comorbidities can be expected. Delirium is a significant, common [2, 12, 15, 18] and dangerous complication [1, 3, 11, 20] in acutely ill, older patients and is associated with significant additional expenses.
