Introduction: The diagnosis of sarcopenia requires the measurement of muscle mass. Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) provides an indirect measurement of muscle mass via the appendicular lean soft tissue, while bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) derives an estimate of muscle mass based on whole body electrical conductivity and specific equations. DXA is considered the reference method but is costly and time-consuming, and only available in a few institutions.
