FormalPara Brief introduction. In very late life various adverse life events, such as spousal loss, commonly occur. Often due to a lack of data availability, individuals living in nursing or old age homes are neglected in research. For example, the prevalence and determinants of loneliness in oldest old residents of nursing or old age homes are largely unknown. Such knowledge is of great relevance to better understand the significance of loneliness among the oldest old residing in institutionalized settings.
