IntroductionThe United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UN-CRPD) is a human rights treaty that grants persons with disabilities, such as people with dementia (PwD), the freedom to make their own choices (Article 3(1)) [17]. State authorities are obliged to support their ability to make legally valid decisions. This encompasses the right to make decisions regarding a particular medical treatment and to give voluntary, prior and informed consent.As dementia progresses, PwD can lose their capacity to provide informed consent to complex medical treatment.
