IntroductionIn the 1960s, both the USA and Canada experienced a drought in the medical profession. As a result, remote rural areas faced a lack of medical services and severely reduced nursing care (Kaasalainen et al. 2010). One reason for the lack of medical professionals in these regions was the increased pull for physicians to obtain specializations. Other factors included the newly emerged publicly funded health insurance and the increased importance of primary care services in Canada.
