Background: Dementia affects over 47 million people worldwide, with 7. 7 million new cases each year, and is thus declared a public health priority by the WHO. Studies in older adults or those with cognitive impairment have shown associations between cognition and olfaction. Population-based studies are thus far largely lacking.
