Introduction: Diphtheria is a vaccine-preventable disease caused by diphtheria toxin (DT) producing, i. e. toxigenic Corynebacterium (C. spp. ) of the three species C. diphtheriae, C. ulcerans and -very rarely – C. pseudotuberculosis. In 1997, the German National Consiliary Laboratory of Diphtheria (GNCLD) was founded to assist diphtheria surveillance in Germany and to serve as a reference laboratory supporting laboratories in the diagnosis of diphtheria by offering cost-free testing (incl.
