Zusammenfassung

Objectives The historical relationship between socioeconomic status (SES) and mortality is important for understanding the development of the health of populations in the long-term. However, administrative data to study the evolution of socioeconomic inequalities in lifespan prior to 1980ies do not exist in Austria. In line with a recent proof-of-concept study (Mayer et al. , 2023, SSM Popul Health), we utilize newspaper obituaries as an innovative data source to estimate the historical development of socioeconomic inequalities in lifespan.
