Background For most new parents, this is a joyous, although challenging experience, as they adjust to their roles and get to know their baby and how they will relate to each other. However, a significant proportion will develop a mental illness during pregnancy and up until the baby is one. For women, this rate is one in five, and for men, one in ten. Figures are likely underestimates, as barriers exist for individuals to ask for help and be identified by services.
