Zusammenfassung

Oxygen therapy is used to reverse hypoxemia in acute and chronic diseases since more than a century. In acute hypoxemic respiratory failure supplementary oxygen remains the first-line therapy in the management of these patients. For chronic hypoxemic patients with an arterial partial pressure of oxygen (PaO2) ≤ 55 mmHg long-term oxygen therapy (LTOT) is recommend when the following conditions are met: increase of PaO2 (or SpO2) with a defined oxygen flow, application time of at least 15 h/day.
