Zusammenfassung

This case study illustrates the importance of a dif- ferentiated, patient-specific diagnostic approach. Homozygous sickle cell disease usually manifests itself in the form of hemolytic and vaso-occlusive crises, while the heterozygous form of the disease can be poten- tially life-threatening if the patient is unaware of the mutation. It is of crucial importance that athletes with a corresponding risk profile train according to their exact mutation status.
