Since the development of an effective antiretroviral therapy (ART) in 1996, substantial progress has been made in terms of efficacy, safety and ease of use. While at the beginning of the ART era the foremost goal necessarily was patient survival, over time it has become increasingly possible to shift the focus towards aspects of patient's quality of life. The latest developments are the long-acting injection therapies (LAI), foregoing for the first time the necessity to take pills.
