Transarterial embolization (TAE) or chemoembolization (TACE) is performed through a microcatheter, using microspheres, drug-loaded particles, or an emulsion of ethiodized oil and chemotherapeutic agents. To preserve as much functional liver tissue as possible, a lobar TACE should be performed in cases of multiple tumors in one lobe, while a single lesion may require a selective or superselective (segmental or supersegmental) approach.
