Abstract It is well established that child maltreatment is associated with the development and course of mental diseases in adulthood. The aim of the present paper is to reflect upon the question whether these adverse experiences are adequately considered in psychiatric practice. Medical files of 3680 adult inpatients of a psychiatric hospital were analyzed with regard to entries referring to experiences of abuse and neglect in childhood.
