The classical somatic mutation theory of carcinogenesis and metastases (SMT) explains malignant transformation by incidence of mutations in oncogenes or tumor suppressor genes. These mutations lead to a cell-autonomous activation and thereby growth advantage compared to neighbouring cells. However, this SMT does not seem fit to completely explain many characteristics of carcinomas.
