Abstract Vaccinium species differ in their active principle. The Scandinavian berries (V. vitis-idaea) have a higher content of active principle than the American berries (V. macrocarpon), named Großfrüchtige Moosbeere, Kraanbeere or Kranichbeere, today rather Cranberry. However, fractions from Cranberry also have a potent effect against caries and periodontitis. The mechanism of action is almost identified.
